For Mattie and Ken, it's late September, which is too early for a big snowstorm. But that's exactly what they get, with heavy winds and blowing cold, putting everyone in mind of the Armistice Day blizzard of 1940, which is still the #2 biggest (and deadliest) blizzard event in MN history.
Up at the cabin, a mouse gets loose, and Mattie gets mad.
Out west, Ken leaves the United States, and never got his watch.
